birthday giveaway circa 1968

Some 41 years ago (sorry Mum, age coyness must be sacrificed in the interests of blog post authenticity) my Mum turned 21.

Being the hip young thing she was, plus a bit of a dab hand with the sewing machine, Mum decided she'd whip up a dress to wear to her party.

A pattern, something short, yet floaty, was selected and the fabric, a lovely buttery yellow cotton, duly chosen. The pieces were cut, some tacked to the lining and then work stopped, never to be completed.

Mum, being the sort of person to never throw anything out (this is a woman who darns panty hose and rinses and pegs out freezer bags), has kept the cut out fabric for some 41 years, neatly folded and stored. Until now.

On behalf of Mum, I'm giving away this fabric, on the proviso that it goes to a good home and is put to use. There's about two metres of it in total, cut into usable sized pieces. I would estimate there's enough to make a skirt, or a top or two.

Perhaps it could be made into a girl's dress and finally go to the party, some 41 years late.

If you'd like the fabric, just leave a comment on this post by Wednesday 19 August.

Gosh Stacey that is really pretty. I was thinking it would make a lovely dress for my daughter but then thought no I would be even better as a top or skirt for me! My mum was also a horder of all things wonderful and not so. I was able to make by daughter clothes from the same fabric that was used to make me clothes as a child.

Wow. It's as old as me! I wish my mum was a horder.....but I bet my kids will wish I wasn't!

I was hoping that you were going to finish the work your mum started by making the dress...

DO you know how much I had a big smile on my face when I read that post? My auntie does the same thing with the plastic bags (*heehee*) but I must admit, my mum stopped being a hoarder a few years ago...

Lovely material. I can't believe that your mum has had it for so long!

I'd really like to make the dress as it was intended - I'm just taking up sewing again (I used to make my own dresses way back when too!) so it'd make a great first big project.

This fabric is gorgeous - I am so in love with yellow at the moment. Would love to let it finally get to that party.
