dear bus driver

I enjoyed our discussion yesterday and wish to thank you for pointing out the defecit in my knowledge of the road rules. I would have thought that after 18 odd years behind the wheel that I would have a pretty good understanding of the rules of the road, but apparently not. It was very kind of you to alert me to my shortcomings in such a productive and constructive manner.

click to visit LeelooMy understand was, until you sought to correct me, was that if two vehicles are approaching a point in the road where obstructions on either side allow only one vehicle to pass at a time, then the vehicle that first arrives at that narrow point has right of way. Silly me to not realise that you, despite not arriving at that narrowing until some 5 seconds later, should be allowed to proceed first.

Of course, you were fully justified in blocking the exit to give me time to think about the error of my ways, or were you just admiring my new car? Its unfortunate that in doing so you also held up about ten other cars in each direction, but no doubt they benefitted from your wisdom also.

I can only assume you were shooing a fly inside the bus, not suggesting I should reverse to let you through. Someone of your infinite vision and wisdom would have seen that I could not reverse due to the cars backed up behind me. Those drivers obviously didn't see the fly as they assumed they should reverse in turn allowing me to do so.

Please be assured that in reversing, I was backing up, not backing down.

Thank you for taking the time to lower your window as we eventually passed to inform me that you felt fit to discuss the situation with your bus depot manager via your radio. I too felt it important to pass on to your bus company that your courtesy, common sense and decency is above reproach.

To make matters worse, it seems your Depot Manager is incompetent, or at least, not aware of the full scope of your bus driving excellence. I was outraged when he said that some bus drivers are fools (or was it tools?). Being the driver that you are, I am sure you will take such an insult on one of your many chins.

I look forward to our paths crossing again, and should I greet you with a one fingered wave, please interpret it as a sign of the respect you deserve.

Signed, car driver.

I absolutely adore open letters to random people and entities unlikely to respond. Yours is a terrific example!!

In the future, I will now wait at the narrow pathway until a bus arrives before crossing. It may take minutes or months, as most of my roads aren't bus routes, but I'll patiently wait.

Thanks for sharing your new found wisdom!

What a w...ally he sounds.

It sounds like you dealt with it very well - I may have used much stronger language.

Good for you! Like you, no one can drive as good as I.

(Love the new 'hair-ups'...)

Oh yay for complaining to the bus depot. I bet the fool can't make anything as pretty as your hair-ties either.

That sounds like a horrible thing to happen to you - but thanks for the laugh. I'm glad you complained about him.

sounds like one of the 'tool's who drives the buses in our 'hood, they will actually speed up & tail gate if you try & pull out in front of them, charmed i'm sure...

*snort*

that's why I like this blog.

I like a sistah that peppers with obscenities and finger gestures, and yet still keeps herself nice and kultured like.

Hope it wasn't my street - it can get a bit like that around there, and I get shitty if I don't get a friendly nod/wave FFS...

Sheesh, I felt rising levels of grumpiness just reading this post. I need you in the car next time someone tries to ram the Volvo from behind when I'm trying to reverse park. I swear, we Volvo drivers get more beeps than anyone.

I enjoyed this one. What's the deal about the whole 'Might is Right' thing with trucks and buses?

u should have seen the number of cases we had of bus drivers vs car drivers when working in law, because of course, bus drivers are allowed to pull out into oncoming traffic whenever they wish. No need to look in mirrors. Silly car drivers - as you point out, they should know that buses have right of way everywhere ;)
